What happens when you bring passionate street musicians to classy and elegant hotels? We conducted the experiment together with 2 Mercure hotels in Berlin and it turns out to be a real success! In the past 3 months, 6 Berlin based musicians brought along their guitars, keyboards, vibraphones and even melodicas to busk in the hotel’s lobbies for guests and curious passersby.
Six different artists and atmospheres
1. Ben Wuyts
The first artist to be invited was Ben Wuyts, a singer-songwriter coming from the UK and currently based in Berlin. He played for about two hours in the lounge area of the “Mercure Hotel Berlin City”, located near the Museum für Naturkunde. Intrigued by Ben’s poetic voice and guitar, the guests started to gather around him to enjoy his covers and original songs.
Listening to @benwuyts' original songs and covers last night was the perfect way to end the week. 🎉 this was at the "Mercure Music Experience no.1" in Berlin (@mercurehotelberlincity), next one is happening on November 17. Be there 😉✌️ . . . #bookastreetartist #music #live #guitar #musician #streetmusic #thursdaynight #mercurehotel #berlin #germany #art #artstagram #instaart #beautiful
2. David Hirst
The second musician to play was David Hirst, a finger style guitarist who performed both covers and original pieces in the cosy lounge and bar of the Mercure Hotel Checkpoint Charlie. His technique combines plucking strings with tapping rhythms on the body of the guitar. It is quite relaxing and a real pleasure for the ears.
3. Geraint John Jones
After David came Geraint John Jones, a colleague and friend of Ben, and also a singer-songwriter coming from the UK. At Mercure Hotel Berlin City, Geraint played a mix of British folk and French chanson, using both languages and styles in his music. The result is quite unusual, dynamic and soulful.
@geraintjohnjones is playing and singing at @mercurehotelberlincity for the third part of the "Mercure Music Experience" tonight! Come, relax and enjoy the good music with us 🎶 Next one will be at @mercurecheckpointcharlie on December 15. We'll be there as always! ✌️ . . . #bookastreetartist #mercuremusicexperience #mercurehotel #berlin #germany #concert #music #live #livemusic #guitar #singer #singersongwriter #art #artstagram #instaart #streetmusic #streetart #thursday
4. Anna Morley
Anna Morley played the next gig at Mercure Hotel Checkpoint Charlie. She brought a very special and relaxing touch to the evening and played some songs mixing vibraphone, keyboard, voice and electronic elements.
Here's an extract of the amazing evening we had with Anna Morley at the 4th Mercure Music Experience taking place at the @mercurecheckpointcharlie. Her music is absolutely unique as she combines vibraphone with electronic elements and keyboard. Don't miss the next event coming up on January 12! . . . . #bookastreetartist #streetart #streetmusic #music #live #electronicmusic #beautiful #concert #mercurehotel #berlin #hotel #mercuremusicexperience
5. Ilo Rive
In January, Ilo Rive performed an intimate and poetic guitar and voice concert, mixing his own songs with some covers. As the audience enjoyed it so much, he played longer than planned and guests stayed until late in the lounge area of Mercure Hotel Berlin City.
Tonight we're enjoying a concert by Ilo Rive at @mercurehotelberlincity, he's playing covers as well as original songs. This is his version of "Walk on the wild side" from Lou Reed, We love his soulful voice and can't wait to hear more! ❤️ . . . #bookastreetartist #streetmusic #music #live #concert #livemusic #berlin #mercuremusicexperience #berlin #guitar #singersongwriter
6. Johannes Kubin
The last artist to play was Johannes Kubin, and he performed together with a second multidisciplinary musician: Francesco De Rosa, playing piano, melodica, and singing. Johannes sang almost only in German with some quite unique interpretations of classics like “Let It Be” by The Beatles, while Francesco accompanied his voice and guitar with multiple instruments and rhythms.
Tonight we're enjoying a wonderful concert by @stefanjohanneskubin (guitar and voice) and Francesco (drums, keyboard and melodica) combining covers and beautiful original German songs written by the singer. Ending the week on a very poetic way! ✌ . . . #bookastreetartist #streetmusic #mercuremusicexperience #mercurehotel #berlin #live #livemusic #concert #singersongwriter #guitar #music #instamusic
Relax and enjoy food, music and drinks
Together with some other hotels in Germany, the two Mercure Hotels hosting the concerts are also implementing the new “Relax” concept, whose motto is “Food, Drinks & You". The idea is all about the enjoyment of delicious uncomplicated food and splendid drinks in a cozy atmosphere. The hotels are modern and comfortable while offering a laid-back environment, giving their guests the feeling that they are in a comfy living room. By organizing the “Mercure Music Experience”, their goal was to connect street musicians with their art loving clients and give them one more good reason to enjoy the “Relax” lounge area and restaurant.
It’s not over!
Every musician brought his/her special touch to the evening, making the atmosphere even more cozy and relaxing. Until February 1, many guests voted online for their favorite gig via the Mercure Hotel Berlin City and Checkpoint Charlie Facebook page. The winner will be announced soon and will get to play in a bigger venue, located in the Mercure Hotel MOA.
We are very glad to contribute to the Relax evenings by matching the hotels with the ideal musicians and are looking forward to the next concerts! Stay tuned and have a look at our Facebook page to know when to be there!
